Texas Receives Area Development Magazine’s 7th Annual Gold Shovel Award
June 12, 2012
AUSTIN – Area Development Magazine has added its voice to the chorus of national publications praising Texas’ low taxes, predictable regulations, fair legal system and skilled workforce, awarding the Lone Star State its 7th Annual Gold Shovel award. Texas has been recognized each year since the magazine began the awards, receiving the Gold Shovel in 2008, and Silver Shovels in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
“Here in Texas, we’ve kept a laser focus on job creation, keeping government out of the way and allowing employers to thrive and create opportunity in our communities,” Gov. Perry said. “Our ongoing commitment to the low taxes, predictable regulations, fair legal system and skilled workforce that have made the Lone Star State the nation’s leading job creator will continue to be a beacon for employers looking for the freedom to risk their capital and see their businesses succeed.”
Shovel awards are presented to states that have achieved significant success in job creation and economic impact. Participating states submit information about their top 10 job creation and investment projects, which are compared to projects in other states with comparable populations based on the number of high-valued added jobs per capita, amount of investment, number of new facilities, and industry diversity.
Gov. Perry has focused on making Texas the epicenter of job creation in the U.S., most recently by calling on lawmakers to uphold principles outlined in the Texas Budget Compact:
• Practice Truth in Budgeting
• Support a Constitutional limit of spending to the growth of population and inflation
• Oppose any new taxes or tax increases, and make the small business tax exemption permanent
• Preserve a strong Rainy Day Fund
• Cut unnecessary and duplicative government programs and agencies
Additionally, the state continues to leverage job creation tools like the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF), which has closed the deal on projects generating more than 63,100 new jobs and more than $21.4 billion in capital investment in the state.
